U.S. authorities have asked VW to build electric vehicles at its plant in Chattanooga as a way of making up for its rigging of emission tests, a German newspaper reported.

Volvo will recall 59,000 cars after some owners experienced their engines stopping and restarting while they were driving. The recall affects five-cylinder diesel versions of Volvo’s 60- and 70-series models made this year.

Wiesbaden, a leafy city in Frankfurt’s commuter belt, is opening a new front in the battle against vehicle pollution after a court ordered the state government to clean up diesel exhaust fumes by September or face a fine.

Volkswagen said its European diesel-car recall is on track, with the first 4,300 of some 2.4 million affected vehicles in Germany fixed in the past three weeks.
